Installing Ubuntu 18.04.2 Desktop on Virtual Box 6.0

Steps to Install Ubuntu 18.0.4 in Virtual Box:

(1) Download Guest OS Image and Hypervisor:

1.    Go to Ubuntu Website and get the latest version of Ubuntu Desktop

      URL: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

      18.04.2 is the latest long term support version. Check through recommended system requirements. Download the image and save it to your system.

       

2.    Go to Virtual Box website & download the installer as per your Host OS 
        
      URL: https://www.virtualbox.org/

                   

      Install Virtual Box on your system

3. Check if Virtualization Technology (VT-x) is ENABLED in your system. Virtualization works only if this technology is enabled. In some systems, it is disabled by default.

(2)  Installation of Ubuntu 18.0.4 on Virtual Box 6:

1. Open Virtual Box and Click New

 2. Enter Virtual Machine Details

Name – Name of your newly created VM (say, Ubuntu18)

Machine Folder – Opt to choose a drive other than your OS Drive (NOT C:\)

Type & Version – Linux operating System & Ubuntu-64

3. RAM Allocation

The full slider (8GB in the image above) is your host system RAM

           Choose Minimum 2GB for basic installation. Choose RAM in MB

4. Hard Disk Details

 Go for Minimum 20GB storage space for comfortable usage. 

  

5.  Virtual Machine Details

      Select the VM and Click Start

6. Selection of Start-up Disk

    Choose the exact place where your downloaded OS image is located 
     (if VM cannot detect it automatically)

       

7. Installation of Ubuntu

               a.    Choose Install Ubuntu

b.    Either opt to download or just continue. (Downloading may help later)

     c.    Choose Erase disk and Install 
    
           (it’s a VM & not your physical hard disk)

                               

     d.    Continue with the selection

 e.    Choose your Location  

f.     Choose US Keyboard Layout

                 g.    Enter User Details and Keep noted of your login credentials. 
                      
                      Continue

                       

    h.    Installation starts

    i.     Restart the system and Login     

         Once Installation is Complete, ubuntu screen is displayed as below.

          Press Enter and Login with your details             

Start using the latest Ubuntu Desktop in your Virtual Machine
